A Journey Through History: A Day Trip to Auschwitz

Imagine standing in a place that changed the course of history—a place where the silence is louder than the whispers of the people that visit this infamous historical location.

Auschwitz, the infamous concentration camp during World War II, offers a profound journey into the depths of human history.

As you start your day
We started our day in Kraków, a city rich in culture and history, and one of the loveliest cities I’ve visited in Europe (I’ve been to about 230 European cities +/- just for reference) and Krakow is REALLY that nice!

As the sun starts to climb over the horizon, and your hands grasp a warming cup of Polish coffee and a fresh zapiekanka from a local bakery, you have a sense of excitement about the day, you’re going to visit Auschwitz, and see and learn about the atrocities that occurred not so long ago! I wasn’t sure if I should feel trepidation, sadness, or just embrace the good and bad of it. As with every travel experience, I opened my arms and let the day unfold in front of me, along with the emotions that I would feel that day.

The Journey to Auschwitz
A comfortable drive from Kraków transports you to the gates of Auschwitz. As you arrive, you can feel the foreboding sense of death and anguish that has occurred here, touched not only by the solemnity of this place, but contrasted by the surrounding lush landscapes.

We do suggest guided tours to fully bring to life the historical context that cannot truly be grasped, by simply walking around the vastness of this work camp, and the horrors and shadows of the past.

Wandering Through History
Walking through Auschwitz I, you'll see iconic features, such as the iron gates inscribed with "Arbeit macht frei" (Work will set you free) and brick buildings that house poignant exhibits. It's an overwhelming experience, a reminder of the resilience of those who endured unimaginable hardship.

Then, at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the sheet vastness and size  of the camp is what overwhelmed me most. As far as your eyes can see, you see fields and fields of what once held living quarters for up to 30,000 prisoners, and as you peer across these vast fields, you get a small idea of the scale of the tragedy.

Wooden barracks, remnants of railway tracks, and the ruins of gas chambers continue to stand as silent witnesses to the millions of lives decimated at this “work camp” (death site).

It's a world destination that certainly causes one to reflect and remember the horrors of human beings, people like you and I, who initially thought they were working towards a different and better existence. What lies they were told. The sadness is compelling.

After your visit, I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t take a moment to reflect on the experience. There is the requisite bookshop and cafe where visitors can pick up literature and documents to remember their visit to this once desperate location. We must remember and avoid these same types of influences to o take our right to human rights and freedom.

Return with Knowledge
As you journey back to Kraków, carry with you a deeper understanding of history—a reminder of the strength of the human spirit. Visiting Auschwitz is more than a day trip; it’s a tribute to memory, a pledge that such history will not be forgotten.
